Not all protective cases are equal. Four factors decide whether your gear survives the trip:
- Shell material — EVA hard shells handle impact and stacking; soft nylon keeps weight down for backpack-style carrying. Choose by transport mode, not price.
- Foam density — the interior matters more than the shell. High-density layered foam with CNC-cut cavities stops micro-movements that scratch lenses and sensors.
- Sealing — look for water-resistant zippers, TPU-coated fabrics or true gasket seals. For marine or winter use, ask for IPX-rated options.
- Latches & hardware — buckles and zippers are the first thing to fail. YKK-class zippers and reinforced stitching around stress points extend service life dramatically.
Quick maintenance tips: air-dry after wet trips, never store gear in a sealed damp case, and replace compressed foam inserts before they lose rebound.
